Are Bungs Needed To Mount Water Methanol Injection Nozzles? A common misconception and a question often asked is weather or not welded bungs are necessary when mounting your water methanol injection nozzles in steel or aluminum piping. The answer is no. Its not required. If done correctly. The nozzles can be mounted in both thin wall steel and aluminum piping and will hold up just fine so long as you are not constantly removing and reinstalling the nozzles. If you are, over time the threads will eventually give way at which point you can then weld a bung in place to repair it.
The key to doing this correctly is this. After drilling your hole, only run the tip of the tap through the hole. Do not run the tap all the way through the hole as you will enlarge the hole larger then is needed. Remember, the tap is narrower at the tip and gets wider towards the back.
Next, after you have ran the tip of the tap through the hole. With the water injection nozzle inserted into the 90 degree. See if you can start and thread the nozzle by hand. If you are unable to start the nozzle. Run the tap back through the hole a little further. Then check again to see if you can start the nozzle.
Once you're able to start and thread the water injection nozzle by hand. Hand tighten the nozzle as far as you can go. Then tighten using a wrench. The nozzles do not need to be torqued like a head bolt. Only snugged up to its last thread then stop. Attach the hose and you're finished.
Common Mistake People Make When Using Weld On Style Bungs
Too many times I see people using weld on bungs that are to thick. This causes the water injection nozzle to become recessed to far back into the bung. Preventing the nozzle from opening up and spraying properly instead creating a dribble. When ever you use bungs. You need to verify the tip of the nozzle comes flush with the inside of the piping or whatever it is you are passing it through. If it does not you need to grind down the bung until it does.
